2012 Running Retrospective

My 2012 Targets

Back in February I set myself three running targets for 2012, along with stretch versions of each.  My review of 2012 begins with a look at how I performed against these targets.

A Season Finale Cliffhanger

December 15, 2012

Last weekend I completed my final race of 2012, the reportedly very fast Andy Reading 10k in Chesterton near Bicester.   I believe that I’ve spent significant periods of 2012 in shape to run a aub 40 minute 10k, but never managed to squeeze in a race over that distance when in peak condition.  In fact, my PB of 40:27 dates back to early 2011. This time round I was certainly not at my absolute best but hoped I could lower my PB at least.

Loch Ness Monster

October 1, 2012

Two and a half years ago, I couldn’t run for a bus. Yesterday I ran a marathon in 3 hours, 13 minutes and 32 seconds.

As most of you will have heard all too often, my first attempt at running a marathon did not go to plan. The Loch Ness Marathon, therefore, was as much about redemption for me as anything else. The tricky part was that I still don’t really know what went wrong at London so I couldn’t be certain what to change this time round. I decided to leave as little to chance as possible. Firstly, I took on email based coaching from the amazing Sam Murphy and followed her schedule to the letter.  Every minute of every mile of every run! Secondly, I took nutrition more seriously than before, eating and drinking reasonably well throughout my training and ensuring I followed a carbo-loading plan in the three days before the race.  Lastly, I planned my race experience in detail, from arriving in the Highlands two days before the race through to a pacing plan and a fuelling strategy.

Burn Baby Burn-ham Beeches

August 19, 2012

As you all know by now, I like running. I actually enjoy doing it. I realise that many people find this quite hard to believe. I used to be one of those people.  Some days, however, no matter how hard I try to convince myself, it’s just not fun.  Today was one of those days.

Professional Help

June 5, 2012

When my friends and family commented that I “should seek professional help” I chose somewhat optimistically to assume that they meant running coaching rather than psychiatric counselling.

May Stats

June 4, 2012

May has been, for the most part, rubbish. My ankle injury lingered longer than I expected so my mileage was close to negligible. The month finished on a much more positive note, however, with my awesome new coach kicking off my custom training schedule for the marathon in September. Much more of that in another post soon.

April Stats

May 7, 2012

April has been a month of highs and lows. The start of the month brought a half marathon PB, the middle of the month a disappointing 10k and the last couple of weeks, time out injured. I picked up a weird ankle niggle which is on the mend but still not well enough to be back running. Annoying, but it is what it is. Obviously, my mileage for the month was way down.
